On January 5 an exhibition, “FUGUES” will open Rutgers University Art Library, Voorhees Hall, 71 Hamilton Street, New Brunswick NJ.  Meredeth Turshen will present artwork in the medium of oil paint on paper.  “FUGUES” will be open to the public from Monday, 5 – Saturday, 31 January 2015, and a reception to meet the artist will be held on Wednesday 28 January 4:30 - 6 pm.  Library hours are M - Th 8:30 a.m. - 10 p.m., Fr 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sa 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Su 2 p.m. - 10 p.m. The library is closed Mon, Jan 19, 2015.

“FUGUES” is a visually evocative and illuminating exhibition devoted to recent work by Meredeth Turshen who is exhibiting new bold, layered and textured paintings in oil on paper, with traces of pastel and graphite. The compositions balance sensibility and emotion, reality and imagination and evoke energy and movement. Meredeth Turshen’s new work evokes a balance of sensibility and emotion, reality and imagination; it radiates light and draws inspiration from the environment.  The titles are taken from Louise Glück, Averno (2006). All work is dated 2014.

Meredeth Turshen is a Professor in the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Her research interests include women and war, international health, women’s health and public health policy, and she specializes in African affairs. She has published a dozen books. She studied at the Art Students League in New York, starting in Saturday classes for children and continuing, after majoring in studio art at Oberlin College, to train in workshops at Pratt, the Printmaking Council of NJ, the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking, the CT Center for Graphic Arts, and elsewhere. Her work can be viewed at Viridian, a Manhattan gallery, and at hob’art in Hoboken, NJ.
