EndNote Tutorials

EndNote is a citation management tool used by researchers, faculty, and students to store, organize and cite references. This guide is to show how to use EndNote effectively.

Import References from PubMed

Importing references from PubMed into an EndNote library is easy. Below is the instruction on how to export references from PubMed to EndNote. Please be aware that the following steps were based on the Chrome web browser.

  • Connect to PubMed with the Rutgers specific link.
  • Perform a search.
  • On the top of the search results page, you have three options to work with the search results: Save, Email, Send To. To export to EndNote, you need to choose Send To.
  • Then click Citation Manager.
  • Choose All results on the page, or All results, or Selection (whichever option that suits your needs) to export. Note, in New PubMed, you don't choose the # of references to display in a pull-down menu. Instead, you can display more references on the page by clicking Show more at the bottom of the screen. When choosing All results, you may export up to 10,000 references at once.
  • Click the Create file blue button.
  • An NBIB Formatted File (PubMed) (.nbib) will be saved in your Downloads folder and shown at the lower left corner of the screen (in Edge, it will be at the upper right corner). Clicking the file will automatically place all the exported references in your pre-chosen EndNote library. If you did not choose one, the default EndNote library will be the one you last worked with. So it is important that you make sure you have the right EndNote library ready before exporting.

Import References from CINAHL

The following steps were based on Chrome:

  • Perform a search in CINAHL via EBSCOhost.
  • On the search results page, select the desired references by clicking the folers on the right side of the screen.
  • Then click the open folder icon on the top of the screen.
  • Click in the box next to Select/deselect All to include all the selected references.
  • On the right hand of the screen, click on Export.
  • On the next Export Manager page, under "Save citations to a file formatted for: ", click in the radio button for Direct Export in RIS Format. Then click the Save button of the left side.
  • A delivery.ris file will be placed at the lower left corner of the screen.
  • Click on the .ris file. The selected references will be imported into your library.

Import References from RUL QuickSearch

Exporting references from EndNote is easy. Here are the steps:

  • Go to any of the RUL homepages. (Here I used the RUL Health Sciences Libraries homepage - https://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/health-sciences)
  • Perform a search in the QuickSearch box.
  • On the search results page, select the references by clicking the Pin icon to the right of the desired references. The selected references will be placed in your favorites marked with a Pin icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Once you complete selecting the references, go to your favorites by clicking the Pin icon (Go to my favorites) on the upper right corner. Your selected references will be displayed.
  • Click the box under SAVED RECODS to include all the selected ones. Then the ... icon ("Push to" actions) above will be enabled.
  • Click the ... icon ("Push to" actions) to display the action options. Choose EXPORT_RIS. A file named Primo_RIS_Export.ris will be saved in your Downloads folder.
  • Click that .ris file. The references will be placed in the EndNote library that you worked on previously.

Note: Make sure the library you want to hold these references are made ready before you export the references.
