Independent Voices

Independent Voices is a fulltext database of alternative press newspapers and magazines published mostly in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to African-American publications, it includes periodicals from, among others, student, LGBT, Latino/a, and Native American organizations. Like Ethnic News Watch, it's a good resource to get views of the Panthers from outside the mainstream press. It includes The Movement, a SNCC publication and articles syndicated in the Liberation News Service.

Click Search, then Advanced Search. Even here your search options are rather limited, but you can, for example, limit by date and search by author (as well as fulltext, etc.). The only way to save is to right click on a page and save that individual page as a PDF.

If you have any questions about Independent Voices, click Email Me, below the Your Footnotes, Bibliography tab.
