Black Thought & Culture

Black Thought and Culture is a fulltext database of non-fiction writing by leading figures in African American life and culture. It covers all periods of U.S. history, but is strongest for the twentieth century. It's very important for research on the Black Panther Party because it's the only database that makes available the Black Panther newspaper.

Especially if you’re still searching for or trying to narrow down a topic, a good strategy here is to start with a fairly broad search, then use tools in the database to focus it in different ways:
- Search: “black panthers” and vietnam in the search box, gives you 372 titles.
- Then check out the limits on the left in the search results. In this example, we could, for instance, limit to writings by Huey Newton, under AUTHOR/CREATOR. Now we have 42 titles. You could also click More under AUTHOR/Creator to see additional authors or to choose more than one author.
- Then add another term to your search, search for it in your search results. For example, if you add draft, you’ll get seven writings from Huey Newton, including articles from the Black Panther Newspaper and a “Statement from the Minister of Defense.”
If you view the full text in your search results, the terms you searched for will be highlighted.

To search in just the Black Panther Newspaper, go back to the initial search page by clicking Black Thought and Culture in the upper left, then go to the bottom of the page under Featured Content and click Black Panther.
- Use a similar search as above. For example, start by searching just breakfast, 190 articles in the newspaper.
- Then add another term to your search, or use the limits on the left. For example, you could limit by Publication Year: 1969, 16 articles. Or by  Subject: Health, 43 articles.

There are a number of ways to save what you find in Black Thought and Culture. The easiest and most reliable is, when you’re viewing full text, click Embed/Link. Then copy to URL to a Word document or Google doc for future reference, along with the title or a note to identify it later.

You may occasionally run into problems searching Black Thought and Culture. For example, if you get a message that says Bad Request, you’ll have to close your browser, then start over. Click Email Me under the Your Notes, Bibliography tab if you have any questions about your research. I can email you some search suggestions or we can meet online or in person and search together.
