Black Panther Party

Archives Unbound

We have access to two modules in Archives Unbound: Federal Surveillance of African-Americans, 1920-1984 and Federal Response to Radicalism in the 1960s. These are declassified (and redacted) FBI files, and you'll want to search both. The COINTELPRO material, for example, is only in Federal Surveillance of Radicalism. FBI files contain a variety of material, including news clippings, reports of public meetings, and reports from confidential informants. There are nearly 200 files in both modules that refer to the Panthers.

To search both modules, start in Federal Surveillance of African-Americans. To search both Federal Surveillance of African Americans and Federal Response to Radicalism, use the search box at the top of the page, not the search box under Explore this Collection. Search "black panther*" plus additional terms that relate to the topic. For example:
"black panther*" and (marx* or comunis*)
Remember * is a wildcard and gets forms of a word, comunism, communist, communists, etc.

Within the full text, click on page numbers under Relevant Pages on the left to see where your search terms appear in the document. There's also a search box to search for additional terms. In the upper right, you can create a citation, print, download, or create a permalink.
