"Dizzy Gillespie and His Bent Trumpet": article by Joseph Stromberg of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. Gillespie, alongside Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke, and a few others, originated Bebop Jazz in the early 1940s; he later helped develop Afro-Cuban Jazz in his work with conga drummer Chano Pazo, and boldly ushered in a new era of big-band Jazz in the face of financial and cultural barriers.

Interview by Bob Bernotas with the composer who brought the trombone into the Bebop era and lead some of the the best bands of the 1950s and '60s, including a famous grouping with fellowing trombonist Kai Winding. Johnson also experimented with Third Stream methods and composed for film and television.
