Integrative psychotherapy 1989
Jonelle Goddard and Harry Ratner
In part one of
this six-part series, five noted psychotherapists discuss their varying
perspectives of what integrative psychotherapy is.
Dr. Davison's approach is to assume that people's conscious thoughts can play a
role in how they react and feel about things and especially can be a point of
leverage in therapeutic intervention, the assumption is that people can develop
distorted or otherwise negative ways of thinking about themselves and a
therapist can help correct or change these ways so they feel more useful.
The integrative approach Dr. London believes, involves two dimensions:
technical change - what therapists are able to do, and social or historical
change - what therapists are called on to do.
Dr. Wachtel's integrative approach is primarily psychodynamic but includes
behavior and family systems approaches.
His theory deals with the internal state of the client and how that
internal state is translated outwardly into behaviors that affect others.
Dr. Greenberg's approach emphasizes emotional processes and views emotions as a
complex integration of different levels of information processing--of affect,
of cognition, of physiology.
Dr. Meichenbaum believes that the way a person interacts with others
contributes to the problems they have.
He believes that the collaborative relationship between the client and
therapist can help to build new methods of interaction in the client's repertory
of behaviors. 1 videocassette (51 min.)
