Sext up kids c2012
The powder keg that is porn culture has exploded in the lives of North American children. From thongs and padded bras for 9-year-old girls to "sexting, " 24-7 internet porn, and unfiltered social media, kids today are bombarded with commercial sexual appeals like never before. In this astonishing new documentary, award-winning documentary filmmaker Maureen Palmer explores what this radical transformation of the culture means for young people, parents, and our very notions of childhood. Palmer interviews researchers who have been tracking how the accelerating pressure to be sexy -- and sexual -- is changing kids' behavior and undermining their health. She sits down with parents and educators struggling to help kids navigate puberty in a hypermediated cultural environment that no longer seems to recognize or respect the developmental needs of children. And she talks to teens and pre-teens who share eerily casual insights into the routine role sex plays in their lives. The result is a stunning exploration of the sexualization of childhood and a startling wake-up call for parents who still think their own children are immune to the excesses and influences of today's sexed-up youth culture. 1 videodisc (42 min.)

Forrest Sawyer, Mike McLeod, Gordon Platt, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Discovery Channel (Firm), and Films for the Humanities & Sciences (Firm)
"There's something new about hatred and racism-- its approach. This program exposes the new face of hate through detailed case studies that show how neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups have targeted America's youth via mass media, particularly the internet, so readily available in schools and homes. The grim example of Lancaster, California, demonstrates how "edge" communities--small towns outside cities--can become recruiting grounds for gangs such as the Nazi Low Riders and the scenes of brutal crimes. Interviews with convicted NLR members at Pelican Bay prison drive home another outcome of hate crime"--Container. 1 videodisc (50 min.)

The education of Shelby Knox a documentary 2005
Marion Lipschutz, Rose Rosenblatt, Shelby Knox, P.O.V. (Firm), Independent Television Service, Cine Qua Non (Firm), and InCite Pictures (Firm)
Documentary which presents the political activism of high school student Shelby Knox. The film begins in 2001 when Shelby Knox, a 15-year-old high school sophomore, joins the Lubbock Youth Commission, a group of high school students empowered by the mayor to give Lubbock's youth a voice in city government. Knowing that Lubbock, Tex. had one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease in the nation, the Youth Commission questioned Lubbock's abstinence-only sex education policy. Shelby, a politically conservative Southern Baptist who had pledged abstinence until marriage, became the group's most vocal proponent of comprehensive sex education. The documentary explores other issues beyond the debate over abstinence-only versus comprehensive sex education. It portrays Shelby's family's struggle with teen independence; Shelby's struggle with her Christian faith; Shelby's widening activism into other issues, such as the creation of a Gay/Straight Alliance at her high school; issues of tolerance; and the power of political activism. 1 videocassette (76 min.)
