Josh Aronson, Ariel Orr Jordan, Eve Ensler , and Aronson Film Associates

"Beautiful Daughters is a film about the craetion of the first all transgender production of Eve Ensler's 'The Vagina Monologues' and some of the extraordinary women who made it happen. This production was a first-ever gathering of the transsexual community's best and brightest from all over America. All of these women were born as boys. Casablanca calling " ... Casablanca Calling highlights a quiet social revolution under way in Morocco, where 60% of the women have never attended school. For the first time, Moroccan women are trained and employed as official Muslim leaders, or morchidat. Charged with teaching an Islam based on tolerance, compassion and equity, they provide vital support and guidance to communities, especially to girls and women. At the film's heart are Hannane, Bouchra and Karima, three morchidat assigned to mosques in different parts of Morocco ... Offering unique access to a story we rarely see, this illuminating documentary demonstrates how women's empowerment through moderate Islam is transforming a nation"--Container. 1 videodisc (75 min.)

A changing heart 2002 and 2004

Leigh M Devine, Devinepix (Firm), and Filmakers Library, inc

"A Changing Heart (52 min.) takes an intimate look at how the Japanese, in a mere century, have come to adopt love as a rationale for marriage. By examining the changing roles of women, the shape of families, the impact of World War II, as well as industrialization and the decline of tradition, we can understand how the Japanese, and perhaps even other cultures, could accept new attitudes toward love and marriage. The film looks chronologically at how arranged marriage evolved and then reveals how this change has left people in Japan today, as they face the quest of looking for a partner. The consequences of this evolution turn out to unleash unexpected quandaries to both individuals and society as a whole"--Http://www.globalfilmnetwork.net. 1 videodisc (52 min.)

De filmer le d© sir voyage ©  travers le cin© ma des femmes = Filming desire : a journey through women's cinema 2000

This documentary explores the works of women film directors, specifically the differences explicit in women's point of view, and expression of desire as articulated in films by women. In interviews, women directors working today discuss how their depictions of sexuality and relationships reflect the basic differences between the sexes--as revealed by image, shot, and story. The filmmakers and their films encapsulate the debates about sexuality, representation and image, and the body (as subject of censorship; as the vehicle of desire and love; as the contested ground of cinematic production) that have raged since the first woman picked up a camera, determined to claim her identity and find her voice. 1 videodisc (60 min.)

It's a girl 2012

"In India and China, where sons are valued and daughters are burdens, millions of babies are killed, abandoned or selectively aborted, simply because they are girls. The result of longstanding traditions and governmental policies, this devaluation of females has led to rampant violence against women and a growing female "gendercide." The film tells the stories of abandoned and trafficked girls, of women who suffer extreme dowry-related violence, of brave mothers fighting to save their daughters' lives, and of other mothers who would kill for a son. Global experts and grassroots activists put the stories in context and advocate different paths towards change, while collectively lamenting the lack of any truly effective action against this injustice."--Container. 1 videodisc (63 min.)

Martina's playhouse 2007, 1986

"In Martina's Playhouse, everything is up for grabs. The little girl of the title oscillates from narrator to reader to performer and from the role of baby to that of mother. While the roles she adopts may be learned, they are not set, and she moves easily between them. Similarly, in filmmaker Peggy Ahwesh's playhouse of encounters with friends, objects aren't merely objects but shift between layers of meaning. Men are conspicuously absent, a lack reversing of the Lacanian/Freudian constructions of women as Ahwesh plays with other possibilities." --Kathy Geritz, program notes (Berkeley: Pacific Film Archive, 1990). 1 videocassette (20 min.) :

The stories address platonic love between men; struggles with Islam, Christianity, homophobia and HIV/AIDS; disability and sexuality; testicular cancer and personal wholeness; images of African American masculinity; a journey from perpetrating domestic violence to becoming an anti-violence activist; men's public restroom rituals; an Oakland activist's refusal to continue intergenerational patterns of violence; costs of homophobia for people of all sexual orientations; spirituality and transformation in San Quentin; transgender identity and gender fluidity; relationships with fathers and other family members; gratitude to lifelong mentors; and other subjects"--Container. 1 videodisc (114 min.) :

Metamorphosis man into woman 2012?

"Three years in the making, this film chronicles one person's transformation from man to woman. As many as 60,000 Americans suffer from 'gender dysphoria' - they don't identify with their own body, but with that of the opposite sex. Over 10,000 have gone on to have 'sex-reassignment' surgery. These people are called transexuals. Gary, 36 when we began filming, has always believed that he is a woman, 'trapped' in a man's body. Before he can be accepted for sex-change surgery, Gary must demonstrate that he can successfully live and work as a women, 24 hous a day, for at least one year. It is during this transition period that the real gender shift occurs, a time of unraveling layers of masculine behavior to uncover 'Gabi,' the woman he believes himself to be. By the time Gabi undergoes surgery the final surgery, the operation will be just one more in her metamorphosis from man into woman.". 1 videodisc (58 min.)

Tough guise 2 violence, manhood & American culture In this highly anticipated update of the influential and widely acclaimed Tough Guise, pioneering anti-violence educator and cultural theorist Jackson Katz argues that the ongoing epidemic of men's violence in America is rooted in our inability as a society to move beyond outmoded ideals of manhood. In a sweeping analysis that cuts across racial, ethnic, and class lines, Katz examines mass shootings, day-to-day gun violence, violence against women, bullying, gay-bashing, and American militarism against the backdrop of a culture that has normalized violent and regressive forms of masculinity in the face of challenges to traditional male power and authority. Along the way, the film provides a stunning look at the violent, sexist, and homophobic messages boys and young men routinely receive from virtually every corner of the culture, from television, movies, video games, and advertising to pornography, the sports culture, and US political culture. Tough Guise 2 stands to empower a new generation of young men - and women - to challenge the myth that being a real man means putting up a false front and engaging in violent and self-destructive behavior. 1 videodisc (78 min.)

Deals with the stereotypical "traditional" images of women in American society, from the 1940's to the 1970's.  The same theme emerges in all of the television shows and commercials: women should be beautiful, good, and interested only in being subordinate to the needs of men and family.  These "standards" appear to apply to American women, regardless of race or social class. These film clips show how, despite the great progress that American women have made in this century, sexual steoreotypes still persist. 3 videocassettes (VHS) (260 min.) :

Eric Blavier, Eric van Beuren, Thomas Lavachery, Y.C. Aligator Film, Studio Télé Objectif (Firm), Radio-Télévision belge de la communauté culturelle française, Tchin Tchin Production, and Filmakers Library, inc

In this documentary filmed in Mosuo Province near the Tibetan border, we learn about a matriarchal society where there are no fathers, husbands or marriages. Uncles care for their sisters' children and act as the fathers of these children. Brothers and sisters live together all their lives in their mothers' homes. The women do all the work, including physical labor and are the bread-winners in their families. Women are usually courted by men from miles away, who come for conjugal "visits." This film also goes on to show how change is now coming to Mosuo Province. 1 videocassette (52 min.)
