Prince Among Slaves (2008) dir. Andrea Kalin, Bill Duke Prince Among Slaves recounts the true story of an African Muslim prince who was captured and sold into slavery in the American South. After 40 years of enslavement, he finally regained his freedom, became a national celebrity, and dined in the White House. 

 

This Is Life with Lisa Ling. America’s First Muslims (2017) dir. Lisa Ling and Heidi Burke.Atlanta. Contrary to what many might think, Islam is far from new to America. Lisa meets 3 very different African AmericanMuslims and learns about the power of Islam to reshape lives in the black community, a community that can trace its connection to back to the very first days of slavery.

It is part of the many threads of culture, colors, religions, and lifestyles that make up the American pluralistic quilt.

 

 

 

Oral History Projects

Muslim Voices of Philadelphia | Scribe Video Center

a community history project exploring the long history of a diverse array of Muslim communities in the region. Members of mosques, masjids, schools, cultural centers, and other Muslim groups combine archival research, ethnography, oral history, and digital media to form a clear and expansive picture of the rich history of Islam in Philadelphia.
