Need Media?: Getting and Accessing Films for Your Courses

The Big Ones

The major resources for digital media at Rutgers are Swank Digital Campus and Kanopy.

Swank Digital Campus

Swank Digital Campus
has an inventory of over 25,000 films, documentaries and TV shows. Because this service is maintained to support classroom instruction, the films available through Swank will vary from semester to semester. What we have access to any particular semester depends on you, the Rutgers faculty, and what you’ve requested for that semester.

Found Your Film and It's Available Now!
Once you log into the Swank portal with your Rutgers NetID, you will see what is currently available to Rutgers users in the database. If Rutgers currently has access to a film, the record will include the option to watch.

If you click on the "Share" button it will allow you to "Copy Direct Link" or to "Copy LMS Link." Either link can be shared with your students; the LMS link would allow you to embed the film into your LMS if you chose to do so.

Rutgers Does Not Currently Have Access to a Film You Think Might be in the Swank Inventory?

Check for the film title in the Swank Digital Campus Inventory If you'd like the Libraries to obtain access to the film for use in your class, just add this to your Reserve Request Form.

Kanopy

Kanopy
Has an inventory of some 30,000 documentaries, as well as classic, foreign, and indie films. Producers include the Criterion Collection, New Day Films, California Newsreel, Kino Lorber, PBS, and First Run Features. Rutgers subscribes to a core collection, which is then augmented by faculty requests.

Once you are connected to the Kanopy platform, log into the "Rutgers Collection." When you search for a title in Kanopy, you are likely to see multiple results since it does not do phrase searching. These are divided into "In Collection" and "Request Access." If the title that you need is in the "Request Access" catagory, you can just click on the film and then click on the Request Film button, fill in the short form, and submit your request.

If a title is "In Collection" it can be viewed right there from the platform.Clicking on the "Share" button will give you the link you can share with your students, or the option for a link that you can use to embed the film in your LMS.

The Film You Need Isn't Listed?
If you need something for a class you are certainly not limited to what may be available as part of an existing database. Just add the title to your Reserve Request Form and we'll do our best to acquire it.

Do We Have Online Films That Aren't in Swank or Kanopy?

Certainly. There are many films for which we have purchased individual licenses; there are also films from other services. These may all be accessed from QuickSearch

Rutgers Doesn't Currently Have Access?

If you'd like the Libraries to obtain access to a film for use in your class, just add it to your Reserve Request Form.

Public Performance Rights

Films licensed through Swank or Kanopy can be viewed online for individual or course use. Public or group viewings of Swank films are strictly prohibited. In some cases, Kanopy films do include public performance rights (PPR) and may be shown at campus events as long as all viewers are Rutgers affiliates, no admission is charged, and no profit is made from the screening. Films with public performance rights have a PPR logo in their descriptions.
