"An edit-a-thon (sometimes written editathon) is an organized event where editors...edit and improve a specific topic or type of content, typically including basic editing training for new editors...The events have included topics such as cultural heritage sites, museum collections, women's history, art, feminism, narrowing Wikipedia's gender gapsocial justice issues, and other topics.[2][3][4][5][6][7] Women and African Americans and the LGBT community are using edit-a-thons as a way of bridging the gap in Wikipedia's sexual and racial makeup,[8] and to challenge the underrepresentation of Africa-related topics.[9]

Why edit Wikipedia? Wikipedia works because of editors who dedicate their time to sharing quality information.

  • Wikipedia needs a diverse set of editors to cover a variety of topics;
  • Contribute to a resource you find useful;
  • Gain skills in research, writing for the web, and citing sources;
  • Meet other people and have fun!

Wikipedia and Engaged Civic Learning

Wikipedia gets about 18 billion pageviews a month and is an increasingly popular destination for quick reference information. However, information about Camden, NJ is limited. Editors can improve the online representation of Camden by adding information about local history, people, places, and organizations to a highly visible platform. It is important to have editors familiar with living, working, and going to school in Camden to add their perspective of what is important information for Wikipedia.

An edit-a-thon is also a unique opportunity for our community to gather and work together. The edit-a-thon is open to Rutgers students, staff, and faculty as well as members of the public living in and around Camden. Our hope is that bringing together everyone's diverse experiences and skills will result in a wide variety of edits to Wikipedia and a broader online representation of Camden.
