MSN - Master of Science in Nursing

This guide will assist students in The Rutgers School of Nursing Master’s degree program.

A bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) is the minimum requirement to become nursing informatics, while advanced degree such as the master of nursing (MSN) and doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) are vital for leadership roles. A certification in nursing informatics can be obtained from an independent organization, such as the American Nursing Credentialing Center and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Inc.

  1. The Informatics Nursing Certification (RN-BC)

Registered nurses can become certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), an affiliate of the American Nurses Association (ANA). ANCC offers the Informatics Nursing Certification (RN-BC) examination.

       2. CAHIMS and CPHIMS

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) offers the following two certifications for the health information experts, including nurses.

  • The Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS) : a pathway for expanding and diversifying industry knowledge for both early careerists and those with more experience.
  • The Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS): a certification program for experienced professionals, acknowledging and honoring their proven expertise and commitment to the field.

For details about the certifications, please check HIMSS certification webpage.
