Shakespeare

All's well that ends well 1980

Elijah Moshinsky, William Shakespeare, Celia Johnson, Ian Charleson, and Angela Down

Delightful scenes and clever characters contribute to the frivolity of this light comedy in whcih Shakespeare uses one of his favorite devices--trickery.  Helena, new wife of the young Count Bertram, resorts to chicanery to win the respect and affection of her husband -- a plot relished by Elizabethan playgoers.  By extolling the cunning of a woman in love, this play exemplifies a typical element of medieval romance. 3 videocassettes (141 min.)

Coriolanus 1983

Elijah Moshinsky, William Shakespeare, Irene Worth, and Alan Howard

In the last of his tragedies, Shakespeare gives Coriolanus as much human warmth as he can, shows clearly his virtues and defects, and accounts for his downfall wholly in terms of his own character.  By focusing on human character rather than on political agreement, Shakespeare reveals a man who is essentially unattractive--one who can be admired for his strength, his openess, even the firmness of his political idealism--but one whom it is impossible to pity or love. 2 videocassettes (145 min.)

Henry VI 1982

Jane Howell, William Shakespeare, Peter Benson, and Trevor Peacock

This first part of the Henry VI trilogy recreates Henry's early days as King.  It is the time of wars in France, from the seige of Orleans to the expulsion of the English from the French soil.  True to the popular view at that time, Shakespeare charecterizes the heroine of the French victories, Joan of Arc, as a "minister of Hell" and a wanton.  On the homefront we glimpse the beginning of the long civil wars between the houses of York and Lancaster. 2 videocassettes (185 min.)
