Rome: The complete series 2009

Robert A Papazian, James G Hirsch, Lyndsey Marshal, Simon Woods, Tobias Menzies, John Milius, William J MacDonald , Bruno Heller, Marco Valerio Pugini, Michael Apted, Kevin McKidd, Ray Stevenson, Ciarán Hinds, Kenneth Cranham, James Purefoy, Polly Walker, Lindsay Duncan, HBO Entertainment (Firm), British Broadcasting Corporation, Television Service, Home Box Office (Firm), and HBO Video (Firm)

Season One: Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the wealthiest city in the world, a cosmopolitan metropolis of one million people, epicenter of a sprawling empire. The Republic was founded on principles of shared power and fierce personal competition, never allowing one man to seize absolute control. But now, those foundations are crumbling, eaten away by corruption and excess. After eight years of war, soldiers Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo unwittingly become entwined in the historical events of ancient Rome. A serialized drama of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, husbands and wives, Rome chronicles a turbulent era that saw the death of a republic and the birth of an empire.
Season Two: In the year 44 B.C., Julius Caesar has been assassinated and civil war threatens to destroy the Republic. In the void left by Caesar's demise, egos clash and numerous players jockey for position. The brutally ambitious Mark Antony attempts to solidify his power, aligning himself with Atia, but coming to blows with her cunning son Octavian, who has been anointed in Caesar's will as his only son and heir. The conspirator Brutus ponders how to curry favor with the masses that have condemned him as a murderer, while his mother Servilia concocts a deadly plot of her own. Meanwhile, Titus Pullo attempts to pull his friend Lucius Vorenus out of the darkness that has engulfed his soul in the wake of personal tragedy. For once again, the fates of these two mismatched soldiers seem inexorably tied to the fate of Rome itself. 11 videodiscs (1320 min.)

This American life c2009

Join host Ira Glass and his company, as they bring a different theme to life each week, in the format of the popular Chicago radio show by the same name. In Escape, teenage boys in Philadelphia impress girls using a mode of transportation obsolete in their neighborhood since the 19th century, and a young man's fight for independence from his mother is complicated by some very specialized circumstances. In Two wars, we learn about two foreigners in the U.S.: one is an Iraqi refugee, traveling the U.S. to let Americans ask him anything they want, and an immigrant from Bulgaria, who realizes that an ongoing argument with his American wife about lawn maintenance has to do with the life he left behind the Iron Curtain twenty years before. Going down in history tells the stories of people trying to make and remake history, including Wisconsin convicts attempting a prison break using dental floss, high school students whose yearbook photos show nothing of the drama in their lives, and a man with a decades-long obsession with one particular bird, who reveals the footage that may prove he's actually seen it. Underdogs features the world of boxing, way down the "food chain" from championship fights, and a group of New York kids who fight bullies by being funny. Scenes from a marriage profiles cartoonist Chris Ward's illustrations showing that every marriage, even a happy one, is a courtroom, and the disintegration of another couple's marriage is chronicled, as the husband's obsession with a legal forces them to face some tough questions. John Smith is the story of one life, told through the eyes of people all over the country who share the name John Smith. 1 videodisc (201 min.)
