Before the rain (a tale in three parts) c2008

This trio of stories begins with "Words," as a young Macedonian monk discovers an Albanian girl hiding in his quarters, and attempts to hide her from a local militia. In the third, "Pictures," the photojournalist returns to his Macedonian village and becomes embroiled in centuries-old skirmishes. For these people, as one of them says, "Time never dies ... the circle is not round." Bufor 2008, 2007

In 2000, not far from the old seafarer's fortress, Beaufort is a military base with the same name kept by the Israeli army. This heavily guarded post has been here since the war in Lebanon in 1982. It is a symbol not only of Israel's most controversial campaign for military control of Lebanon, but also of a sacrificial struggle during which many soldiers lost their lives. The Israeli troops move out of Lebanon, leaving behind their base at Beaufort. On the evening of May 24th, the base is destroyed, blown up by thousands of mines. The powerful explosion marks the end of eighteen years of Israeli occupation. The film tells the story of Liraz Liberti, the 22-year-old commander of Beaufort, and his troops during the last few months prior to their withdrawal. The story does not center on the war but on their retreat. The base is still under enemy fire as Liraz prepares to explode the site, thus destroying everything that his friends and comrades have died for trying to defend. 1 videodisc (126 min.)

Culloden The war game 1996

Peter Watkins, Dick Graham, Michael Apsel, British Broadcasting Corporation, and Facets Video (Firm)

Two anti-war films by Peter Watkins -- the first, Culloden, is a dramatic reenactment of the Battle of Culloden in 1746 in Scotland between the rebellious highland Scotch forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Stuart) and the regular British Army sent to Scotland to put down the rebellion. The battle, won by the British, was one of the most mishandled and brutal in British history. The War Game fictionally enacts the carnage and destruction that would result from a thermonuclear war between the Soviet Union and England. The film, originally intended as a BBC documentary, raises distrubing questions about the societal logic that permits the existence of thermonuclear weapons. 1 videocassette (121 min.)

L'Armee des Ombres is a stark and unvarnished story about Resistance fighters in Vichy France in 1942-43 when the French leadership allowed the Nazis to occupy the country. The members of this army are cold, hungry, desperate men and women, with false names and no addresses, who can be betrayed in an instant by a traitor or an accident. They know they will probably die. A meditation on the nature of resistance and the price of courage, these heroes can save their own country only by cutting themselves apart from it. Entangled in the political turmoil engulfing France in the wake of May '68--as a result received poorly there--the film was not distributed in the US until 2006.
