Al-Firdaws al-mafqud Paradise lost 2007?

Ibtisam Mara`anah, Duki Dror, Zygote Films , Noga Communications, TVOntario, and Women Make Movies (Firm)

Arab Israeli filmmaker Ebtisam Mara`ana grew up in Paradise (Fureidis in Arabic), a small fishing village overlooking the Mediterranean. One of the few Arab communities remaining after the 1948 war, Paradise became culturally and politically isolated as Jewish settlements sprang up around it, and today it is a place defined by silence and repression. This film follows the director's attempt to recreate the village's lost history, including the story of her childhood hero Suuad, the legendary local "bad girl" who was imprisoned as a PLO activist in the 1970s and banished from the community. 1 videodisc (56 min.) :

Chronicles of a refugee a documentary series 2010

Perla Issa, Aseel Mansour, Adam Shapiro, and Palestine Online Store

"A 6-part documentary series that looks at the Palestinian refugee experience, in its global context, over the last 60 years ... Filmed in 17 countries, 18 refugee camps, 36 cities, with more than 300 interviews, Chronicles of a Refugee gives voice to Palestinian refugees displaced in 1948, as well as to their descendants."--Container. "Episode 1, the Nakba Dailies, tells the stories of those who were born and raised in Palestine. In episode 2, Palestinians tell the stories of 13 other expulsions they have lived through. Episode 3 looks at the primary experiences of Palestinian refugees: discrimination, whether legal, political, economic, or social. Episode 4 looks at questions around identity formation for new generations of Palestinian refugees--the impace of camps, of citizenship, and of living in the diaspora. Episode 5 focuses on the right of return, but not U.N. resolutions, international law, or how we have this right; the questions are about what do we want, how do we get it, how individuals and communities have organized. Episode 6 deals with leadership and representation: What is the relationship between the represented and our representatives?"--Narration, disc 1, series introduction. 4 videodiscs :

Frontiers of dreams and fears children of Shatila c2009, 1998

Mai Masri, Jean Khalil Chamoun, Nour Chamoun, Nour Productions, Independent Television Service, and Arab Film Distribution

Frontiers of Dreams and Fears: "This heartfealt documentary ... explores the enduring friendship that evolves between two Palestinian girls--Mona who was born and raised in the economically marginalized Shatila refugee camp in Beirut, and Manar, who lives in the Dheisha refugee camp under Israeli control. The two girls begin their friendship as penpals, sharing the similarities and differences of life in the two refugee camps. Mona and Manar are finally able to meet face-to-face at the Lebanese-Israeli border during Israel's withdrawal from South Lebanon. But when the second intifada suddenly erupts around them shortly thereafter, both girls must face heart-breaking changes in their lives."--Container. Children of Shatila: "The Shatila refugee camp in Beirut first gained international attention after the Sabra and Shatila massacre took place there in September of 1982. Located in Beirut's "belt of misery," the Shatila camp is home to 15,000 Palestinians and Lebanese who share a common experience of displacement, unemployment and poverty. Fifty years after the exile of their grandparents from Palestine in 1948, the children of the Shatila share their dreams of a better future, even as they attempt to come to terms with the reality of being refugees in a camp that has survived masacre, siege and starvation."--Container. 1 videodisc (103 min.) :

"On September 6, 1970, members of the militant Palestinian group, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), hijacked four commercial airplanes.  They commandeered a fifth aircraft three days later.  Wanting to attract attention to the Palestinian cause and secure the release of several of their comrades, the PFLP spectacularly blew up three of the planes ... More than just recounting the events of those tense September days, [the film] examines how and when Middle East militants began to see civilians as legitimate pawns in their struggles for self-determination" -- Container. 1 videodisc (55 min.)

As a Palestinian child growing up in Sweden, filmmaker Lina Makboul admired Khaled for her bold actions; as an adult, she began asking complex questions about the legacy created by her chilhood hero. Malamih Falastinit dai`ah = Fragments of a lost Palestine 2011

Norma Marcos, Fernand Garcia, and MMP Productions

"Filmmaker Norma Marcos has both French and Palestinian passports, yet finds herself a citizen of nowhere. Denied entry to Palestine by the Israeli authorities, she is unable to visit her ailing mother, and spends much of her time on the phone being given the runaround by civil servants. When she is finally allowed home to visit, she is keen to show her friend Stefan how normal people try to live normal lives outside of the occupation, and that there is a vibrant side of Palestine that exists outside of grim reports of violence and war. "They never talk about the beer festivals", muses one friend, who, like Marcos, is tired of world which sees Palestine as nothing but a land of conflict. In a wide ranging essay, through a series of conversations with friends, family and strangers, Marcos demonstrates that despite the inescapably tense political environment, life goes on."--Scheffield Doc Fest website. 1 videodisc (74 min.) :

Plastic flowers never die 2009

Roxanne Varzi, Kasra Paydavous, Hapu Productions, and Documentary Educational Resources (Firm)

"The war with Iraq was the largest mobilization of the Iranian population, achieved primarily by producing and promoting a culture of martyrdom based on religious themes found in Shia Islam. Martyrdom became state policy. Khomeini made it clear the war was a spiritual one that the people, and not a professional army, would fight. It would be a sacred defense; a war of good against evil, of spirit against military might, where a human wave of believers would form a wall of defense against the Iraqis. Over 800,000 people died. Anthropologist, writer and filmmaker Roxanne Varzi spent twelve years researching and writing about post-Revolution public culture in Iran. As an Iranian-American who was born in Iran and left shortly after the Revolution she found that even though she had missed the war with Iraq it was omnipresent. She spent a year in Iran without a film permit speaking to ideologically driven mural painters, museum curators, war vets and other cultural producers alongside the secular youth who were meant to consume the culture created by the government. The result is an experimental documentary and meditation on the aftermath of the war, and especially the mourning after"--Documentary Educational Resources website. 1 videodisc (34 min.) :

"Soraida is a Palestinian woman living in Ramallah, in the occupied territories. In this city under siege and a strict curfew, she fights her own battle: despite the military occupation, violence and oppression, she is determined not to lose her humanity ... Soraida wonders how to reconcile the multiple facets of her identity -- as a woman, a mother and a comitted Palestinian. As a patriot, she is tempted to join the struggle, while as a mother, she is responsible for her two children and must keep her distance. The questions that haunt Soraida, her family and her neighbors take us to the heart of human experience: How to preserve one's humanity in the midst of oppression? How to resist being consum[ed] by hate and anger, caught up in the cyucle of victim and victimizer? How to love one's homeland without laying exclusive claim to it"--Publisher's website. 1 videodisc (52 min.)

Travel to Israel for a look at the causes and potential consequences of a massive new security wall now under construction - a barrier between Israel and Palestine. Ostensibly, the wall is intended to keep suicide bombers out of Israel. But the wall's circuitous route - which seems to go out of its way to include Jewish settlements - smacks of a first step toward formalizing borders for two separate states. But, even as tensions rise in this "demographic time bomb," evidence points to a future that sees Palestinians giving up their pursuit of the West Bank - and fighting instead for a better life. 1 videodisc (ca. 50 min.)

Beirut to Bosnia Muslims and the West : a personal journey by Robert Fisk of The Independent 2002

Robert Fisk, Dennis Walsh, Michael Dutfield, Discovery Channel (Firm), Channel Four (Great Britain), and Films for the Humanities (Firm)

1. This riveting program documents the guerrilla war of Lebanon's Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad movements to free southern Lebanon of Israeli occupation forces and Western interference, beginning with the destruction of the American Marine barracks during the early 1980s. Interviews with Sheikh Hassan Nasralla, Hezbollah suicide soldiers, and civilian casualties of Israeli air attacks--combined with photos of massacre victims and bombing fatalities--underscore both the plight of those caught in the crossfire and the urgent need for a lasting peace in Lebanon
2. This compelling program examines the displacement of Palestinians by Zionist immigrants and Jewish refugees. Spotlights on hte militant Islamic group Hamas, the effects of Israeli rule in occupied Gaza, and the attitudes of Zionist settlers and Palestinian holdouts on the outskirts of Jerusalem reveal the hostility and the humanity, powerfully depicting the plight of refugees on both sides of the historical, religious, and ideological divide
3. This gripping program investigates the desperate situations of Muslims in Egypt and Bosnia, who, though worlds apart, are plagued by a common feeling of betrayal by the West. For members of Egypt's Gama'a al-Islamiya, religious fervor and violence--vehicles to create an Islamic state--are viewed as the only antidotes to poverty and unemployment, while Bosnians fight for the simple right to exist in a Europe that they feel does not want them. Interviews with leaders, fighters, and victims from both regions show the many faces of Cairo and Sarajevo. 1 videodisc (52 min.)

Soraida Abed Hussein, Tahani Rached, National Film Board of Canada, and Women Make Movies (Firm)

50 min.)
