The boy in the Branch 2002
Lalit Vachani, Ranjan Palit, South Productions, Channel Four (Great Britain), and Wide Eye Film (Firm)
"'The boy in the Branch is a powerful unraveling of the implications of the RSS, a fundamentalist Hindu organization that recruits young boys. Initially, it seems as innocent as the Scouts, teaching discipline and respect, but as the facts unfold it's clear that the movement's ideology is tantamount to fascism. Racial purity in a separate Hindustan, by any means, is top of the agenda. The group has already destroyed a mosque and incited bloody rioting between Hindus and Muslims ... a frightening reminder that apartheid operates largely ignored outside of South Africa'"--quote from Time Out, March 1993, taken from container. 1 videodisc (27 min.) :

Cosmopolis two tales of a city 2004
Paromita Vohra, Devi Pictures, and V Tape (Firm)
The forgotten city: "a poem called Mumbai, about a city built by workers. A skyline where mill chimneys are replaced by glinting, cylindrical highrises, that mimic their shape, but do not hold their memory. A singer who recites the names of train stations, a map in song."--Container. Defeat of a minor goddess: "this is a film about food and faith. Anapurna, the goddess of food, a gorgeous meal of fish. Pleased, she blesses the city with gastronomic abundance and even reigns as its (very popular) patron deity. However, very soon she faces competition with the arrival her sister, Laxmi, the goddess of wealth. The rivalry between the goddesses manages to divide the city with all the classical intrigue, insecurity and jealousy that make up a good old fashioned battle. The city spirals into an escalating war over food and property, livelihood and living. Vegetarians don't want to live with non-vegetarians, Saraswat Brahmins don't want Jain neighbours and fishmongers don't want people of other communities to sell fish. Interweaving the fictional war between the goddesses with a documentary exploration of Bombay's food politics, the film interrogates the divisive politics that characterizes contemporary Bombay under its cosmopolitan costume."--Container. 1 videodisc (13 min.) :

In the politically polarized world, universal ideals are rare. In India, as in many places, at times the vacuum is filled by religious zealotry. But why? This documentary examines Indian patriarchy, machismo, and the attitudes they generate toward women and minorities in India, as well as the exploitation of ancient history, popular culture, prejudice, and religion by the unscrupulous for political gain. Violence--whether against women or members of other regions and religions--is embraced by men as a vital component of being "a real man." If the origin of violence against "the other" lays in male insecurity, itself a product of this construction of "manhood," where do the men of India go from there? Forward, or back? 2 videodiscs (120 min.) :

Anand Patwardhan, Apurwa Yagnik, Sushmita Mukherji, and First Run/Icarus Films
Though India is a secular state, religious fundamentalism grips much of its population. This film focuses on efforts by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to destroy a 16th century mosque in Ayodhya supposedly built by Babar, the first Mughal emperor of India. The VHP claim the mosque was built at the birthplace of the Hindu god Ram after Babar razed an existing temple; they are determined to build a new temple to Ram on the same site. This controversial issue, unresolved by successive governments, has led to religious riots costing thousands their lives and culminating in the mosque's destruction by the Hindus in 1992. Presenting instead a vision of the "coexistence" of difference, Said concludes with the fundamental challenge that faces humanity at the turn of the millennium. 1 videocassette (55 min.)
