La nuit, elles dansent 2011
At night, they dance is one family's story. The film takes us into the heart of a clan of women, in which the art of dancing has been passed down from mother to daughter since time immemorial. The youngest daughter, Hind, is in love with a married man -- she is the one who brings scandal into the household. The eldest, Amira, irritates clients and suffers the laments of a woman often courted but never wed. Bossy, a good girl who marches to her own drummer, reluctantly carries on the family tradition. The matriarch, Reda, holds the family and its business together -- sometimes with a light touch, but mostly with an iron fist. The passionate center of the family holds court in her small apartment, where a steady stream of complaints and pleas play out almost theatrically. Here, daily life is slowly unveiled as a delicate balance of fears of the profession's hazards, attempts to cheat reality, and hopes for a better life. 1 videodisc (80 min.)

1880s, the Americans were astounded by the changes they had brought to the
West. Mining towns such as Butte, Montana were now full-fledged industrial
cities. Defeated militarily, Native Americans throughout the region now flocked
to the call of a Paiute mystic, who offered the illusionary hope that the lost
world of the buffalo could be brought back by a Ghost Dance. But its promises
would be trampled in the snow and blood of Wounded Knee. In place of the great
Native American cultures which once dominated the Plains was a new culture,
epitomized by the Oklahoma Land Rush, in which 100,000 eager settlers lined up
for a mad dash to stake out a farm and a future. 1 videocassette (58 min.) DANA. MEDIA.

Tari-tarian di Bali Dances of Bali : Baris Katekok Jago and Kebyar Dudak 198-?
The origins of Baris dances are quite old. In the Kidoeng Soenda, a Javanese romance of the Majapahit dynasty (1275-1477 A.D.), there are described seven kinds of Baris performed during cremation ceremonies of the famous king, Hayam Wuruk. It is only within the last hundred years that, with plot and heroic characters, a dramatic form of Baris has emerged. Kebyar is a Balinese dance form of fairly recent origin. In North Bali in the early part of this century, a style of musical interlude known as gamelan gong gradually evolved into Gong Kebyar, a music rich in dynamic variations. Working with this muscical form, I Mario, from Tabanan in the South, developed a new dance composition, Kebyar Dudak. Kebyar means a sudden flash or explosion and the music of Gong Kebyar is full of flashing rhythms and exploding harmonies. 1 videocassette (30 min.)

"When first seen in the Western world in 1900, African art was viewed as strange and exotic. Yet these works, the booty of colonial wars, would influence Picasso, Matisse, and Modigliani and change the course of 20th century art. This film, while recognizing this impact, introduces noted experts who explain the importance of reappraising African art within its own cultural context. Then local Malian inhabitants in a Bamana village and the walled city of Djenne comment on the function of art and the role of the artist in their society"--Container. 1 videocassette (47 min.)
