APA (American Psychological Association) Publication Manual Tutorials and More: Examples of APA Formatting

Try these tools where you can enter your bibliographic elements (information such as the author, title, publisher, publication date, etc.) to produce an APA compliant bibliography.

• KnightCite (Select APA from the options at the left to begin.)

• Son of Citation Machine (Select the radio button for APA to begin.)

• WorldCat (Search the desired item first, then look for the "cite this" link.)

This is a quick guide (created by the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus) on how to make a "reference list" at the end of your paper and how to "cite in text" using the APA author-date system.  Citing in text means citing the works of those individuals whose ideas, research findings and theories directly influenced your own writing.  You must cite these sources in the text of your paper even if you are paraphrasing someone else's work.

• RefWorks is a Web based bibliography and citation manager subscribed to by Rutgers. You can export citations from the library catalog and other electronic databases. For instructions on how to export citations from databases, click here.  Also click here for instructions on how to export library catalog records to RefWorks. 

• RefWorks helps you organize your research materials by using different folders and allows you to build a bibliography based on the style manual you choose (e.g., APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.).

• If you are a first time user of RefWorks, you will need to open your own account. Click here and proceed to create your own account. It is strongly recommended that you take time to review the RefWorks tutorial available here.

• You can also try an open source reference and research manager such as Zotero.

A word of caution!  It is very important that you understand how to format your references following the APA rules, or any other style manual, so that if the RefWorks program or any other citation maker makes mistakes, you are able to detect the errors and correct them before you turn in your final paper. You are responsbile for your own citations!
