Dana Library: Celebrating Black History Month, 2024

Black History Month in the United States was founded
by Dr. Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), a Harvard-
trained historian who was the son of former enslaved people.

The event, first conceived as Negro History
Week in 1925, was celebrated
for the first time in February 1926.

Learn more about Dr. Carter G. Woodson from the Library of Congress and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
