What's New in the Reading List Tool

This guide contains resources and documentation to orient users to the Reading List Tool's New User Interface. The old guide named, "Reading List: Documentation and Resources" is still available at (https://libguides.rutgers.edu/ReadingList/about).

PDF Annotator tool - Launch

Users can add annotations and highlights to PDFs that are embedded in citations.  To launch PDF annotator, the user clicks the "View PDF" link under the file:

The PDF file opens in a new window. Users may toggle back and forth between setting annotations to Private or Public.  This gives instructors the option to enable or disable Public Annotations on a per PDF/Citation basis.

  • Private Annotations on Course Materials - the comment remains Private and is only visible to the user who added the comment.
  • Public Annotations on Course Materials - the name of the person who wrote the comment, and the date and time of the comment are visible in the annotation menu.  Public comments are searchable in the annotations menu; each student's name appears in a different color above their comment.  Instructor comments appear with an instructor icon next tot their name.  Instructors can delete public annotations or change them to Private.

The instructor annotates the PDF and can set this individual comment as Public or Private:

The student annotates the pdf by either posting a new comment, or directly replying to the instructor's comment.  The student also has the option to make their comment Public or Private:Student responds to instructor pdf comment.
