At home in utopia c2008

Focuses on the United Workers Cooperative Colony, aka the Coops, the most grass-roots and member-driven of the Jewish labor housing cooperatives, where many of the residents were Communists or sympathetic to the communist movement. Beginning as a stalwartly secular East European Jewish working class enclave, they were part of an international movement. Back to Gombin  2002

"Within a tapestry of film, video and stills, Back to Gombin tells the story of a group of 50 children of survivors of Shoah, who return to their parents village in Poland in acts of reconciliation, healing and discovery. They make friends, unexpectedly with many of their parents former neighbors and together they pay homage to their ancestors from this town; formerly a vibrant community of Jews and Christians, who lived together for centuries. We see them together as the reclamation and rededication of the Jewish cemetery, where they have brought the tombstones back from being used as road paving; at the placement of a monument to the Jewish victims at Chelmo, the first extermination camp in Nazi occupied Poland; and at the slave labor camp's mass grave, where the filmmaker's grandfather is buried. The film documents the remaining Jewish survivors of the town (of 2500 Jews, 212 survived and now only a handful of these elderly people exist). Artistically, the film incorporates rare archival film footage shot by an American, born in this town in Gombin in 1937, eighteen months before the occupation."--Case. 1 videodisc (56 min.)

Beyond Eyruv 2008

John Mounier, Basya Schechter, Scott J Gill, DOK Arts (Firm), and Cinema Guild

"Documentary that examines the life of a young Hasidic man-20 year old Moshe Galan- who's chosen to leave behind the only world he's known, the ultra-orthodox community, out of curiosity for the 'world out there' and an urgent need to relieve himself of the limitations inherent in such a closed community. This documentary is, at its heart, about transformation and the challenges that Moshe faces as he departs from his familiar community and enters into an unknown world and culture, a secular society. This new life that Moshe undertakes is filled with struggles as he works toward earning a High School diploma, negotiates his relationship with his grandparents who have encouraged his departure, tries to support himself, all the while, lacking the basic skills to survive in our world. Ultimately, Moshe's biggest struggle is one of faith and his relationship with God and his family who live in Israel. As the story unfolds, we see that Moshe is living in between these two worlds, not finding comfort in either. While he desperately wants to find recognition and acceptance in his new life, he's unable to leave the past behind him, making his future unclear and questionable." -- IMDB. 1 videodisc (72 min.)

Black Israel 2003

This  film is a vibrant portrait of pluralistic 21st-century Jewish identities across the globe. It documents Africans and African-Americans who live in Israel and practice Judaism there. Africans from Nigeria, Togo, the Congo, Zaire, Lagos and Ethiopia have emigrated to Israel to work or to study Judaism. They were unable to study their religion at home since there was no one to teach them. In the Negev desert, several thousand black Americans who fled the urban slums in the 1960s have formed an independent community where they practice their own version of the Hebraic religion under the law of their leader Carter Ben Ami. Although they have been denied citizenship in Israel, they enjoy friendly relations with Israelis and believe Israel is "the kingdom of Paradise on Earth." Many black Jews born in the Caribbean have moved to the U.S. to practice Judaism. One congregant of the Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation in Harlem, born in Trinidad, recalls that his father's family which had Sephardic roots, kept kosher and celebrated the Sabbath. We meet a diverse group of people from a Harlem rabbi who reveals his thoughts on the spread of Judaism in sub-Saharan Africa, to Rebecca Walker, the biracial daughter of civil rights activist Alice Walker and to an African learning Yiddish in Paris. As one Jew from Nigeria concludes, "Judaism has no color.". 1 videodisc (91 min.)

Cohen's fire sale Cohen's advertising scheme c2007

Edwin S Porter and National Center for Jewish Film

Cohen's advertising scheme: This is perhaps the earliest cinematic example of the Jewish stereotype known as the "scheming merchant," a familiar caricature from theater and literature. In this typical one-shot gag film Cohen, a Jewish shop owner, hits upon a new advertising scheme: tricking a passerby into buying a coat on which he hangs a large sign advertising his store on the back--Container. Cohen's fire sale: Cohen is again portrayed as the "scheming merchant." In this film a new shipment of hats is accidentally picked up by the trash man. Cohen pursues the trash wagon throughout New York picking up the hats as they drop off. When the hats are not selling, Cohen reads his insurance policy, arranges for an "accidental" fire, and afterwards holds a fire sale--Container. 1 videodisc (11 min.)

My Israel revisiting the trilogy 2008

Yulie Cohen Gerstel,  Sinai Abt, Channel 8 Israel, Cohen Gerstel Productions (Firm), First Hand Films (Firm), New Danes Production, Magic Hour Films, DR TV (Television station : Copenhagen, Denmark), British Broadcasting Corporation, and Women Make Movies (Firm)

Few filmmakers have probed issues of Israeli nationalism and Israeli-Palestinian relations more completely or intimately than Tel Aviv-born Yulie Cohen. In My Israel, Cohen revisits her acclaimed trilogy My terrorist (2002), My land Zion (2004), and My brother (2007) with new footage, fresh perspective, and her trademark fearlessness. For Cohen, Israel is the land of her ancestors, the land her parents fought for during the 1948 war and the land she herself served as an Air Force officer during the Entebbe crisis. In 1978, working as an El Al stewardess, she survived a terrorist attack in London that killed a colleague and left her with shrapnel in her arm. Embarking on a difficult and emotional journey, she attempts to free the surviving terrorist who attacked her, to question the myths of the state that she grew up in, and to reconcile with her ultra-orthodox brother after 25 years of estrangement. My Israel is an account of remarkable courage and understanding set against the last turbulent decade of Israeli history.
