The iron curtain 2013

Based on an actual case in which Igor Gouzenko, a cipher clerk in the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa, sought political asylum for himself and his wife and child after becoming disenchanted with Soviet espionage activities and the Russian way of life. Basically it is a restrained and well mounted melodrama, anti-Soviet propaganda which was described at the time of its release as a "semi- documentary", presumably because of the use made of Ottawa locations and the screenplay's ostensible base in the report of a 1946 Canadian Royal Commission on Espionage, evidence presented in court and Gouzenko's 'personal story'. 1 videodisc (87 min.)

Phil Mercedes, a once illustrious pilot, forfeits his reputation and his pilot's license because of his fondness for alcohol. Determined to help her brother reform, Phil's sister Kay quits drafting school and comes to live with him. Using an assumed name, Kay wheedles her way into a drafting job at the McLean aircraft factory, where she falls in love with her boss, engineer Martin Ames. McLean is in danger of going bankrupt and thus desperately needs to win a government contract for a new fighter plane. When Martin wrestles with the problems of wing design, Kay presents him with a revolutionary aerodynamic solution that Phil has designed. The plane then undergoes a test flight, and all goes well until test pilot Dick Allerton claims that the wings are unsafe and refuses to perform the last test. Believing that Dick has deliberately sabotaged the test because of his rivalry with Martin over Kay's affections, Phil commandeers the craft to perform his own test. Dick's instincts prove correct, however, when the wings break off during a dive and the plane crashes in a ball of fire. Phil's license is permanently revoked, and the loss of the test model puts McLean in jeopardy of losing his factory until Phil suggests some structural changes to remedy the weakness in the wings. The newly designed craft passes all the tests until the landing gear freezes, imperiling the plane. To save the craft, Phil sacrifices his own life to pry the gear lose, thus winning the contract for McLean and Martin and saving the factory. 1 videodisc (75 min.)

Mission to Moscow c2009

Michael Curtiz, Robert Buckner, Howard Koch, Walter Huston, Ann Harding, Oscar Homolka, George Tobias, Gene Lockhart, Jack L Warner, Joseph Edward Davies, Warner Bros. Pictures (1923-1967), First National Pictures, Inc, Turner Entertainment Co, Warner Bros. Entertainment, and Warner Home Video (Firm)

"In their relentless battle against Hitler, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. were comrades... or at least comrades-in-arms. Hollywood joined the fight with Mission to Moscow, based on Ambassador Joseph E. Davies' bestseller about his pre-World War II experiences in the Soviet Union. The film features Academy Award winner Walter Huston as Davies, plus accomplished actors playing the headline-dominating figures of Churchill, Stalin, von Ribbentrop, Litvinov, Molotov and more. For its sometimes-sympathetic picture of Stalin's regime, the film sparked impassioned debate then and remains fascinating now, both for its insights into early American-Soviet relations and its urgent sense of the danger the emerging Axis Powers posed to the world"--Container. 1 videodisc (ca. 123 min.) :

The Sea Hawk c1940 ; c2005

Michael Curtiz

"In sixteenth century Spain, King Philip II, desirious of conquering the world, dispatches his ambassador, Don Jose Alvarez de Cordoba, to England, the rocky island that stands in the way of his grand scheme. Accompanied by his beautiful niece Doana Maria, Don Alvarez sets sail for England, but as his galley approaches the coast, the boat is attacked and plundered by Captain Geoffrey Thorpe, the privateering leader of a band of intrepid British sea fighters who steal to replenish their country's depleted coffers. Meanwhile, in England, Queen Elizabeth listens to the debate between Sir John Burleson, who urges her majesty to build a fleet in order to defend England against the imperialistic Philip, and Lord Wolfingham, who reassures the queen that Spain represents no threat to England. When the queen protests that she has no money with which to build a fleet, Geoffrey, who is in agreement with Sir John, confides in her his plan to rob the Spanish treasure hunters in Panama. After the queen grants Geoffrey her implicit consent, he readies for his voyage to Panama, but before leaving, meets Doana Maria in the garden and the two fall in love. Meanwhile, Don Alvarez and Wolfingham learn of Geoffrey's plan and dispatch Captain Lopez to stop him, and upon arriving in Panama, Geoffrey and his men are captured and condemned to be galley slaves. Just as Don Alvarez announces Geoffrey's demise and presents Elizabeth with an ultimatum of disbanding her fleet or facing war with Spain, Geoffrey learns that the Spanish Armada is poised to attack England. At Cadiz, he leads a mutiny of the slaves, commandeers a Spanish ship and arrives in England with proof of Spain's treachery. Geoffrey's warning saves England, and after his joyous reunion with Doana Maria, his queen knights him for his valor"--AFI catalog, 1931-1940. 1 videodisc (127 min.)
