Despite strict censorship intended to prevent any inflammatory material from reaching the screen, many early Russian films achieved a remarkably candid portrayal of social conditions.  Gonsharov's The  Peasants' Lot (1912) portrayed the hardship of rural life, while an early film by Bauer, Silent Witnesses (1914) dealt frankly with servants' views of their masters in a Moscow mansion. 1 videodisc (95 min.)

Dva v odnom 2007?

Kira Muratova, Renata Litvinova, Evgenii Golubenko, Aleksandr Bashirov, Sergei Bekhterev, Natal ia Buz ko, and Bohdan Stupka

This celebrated director's "exquisite cruelty" appears front and center when the death of a stage actor turns a theatrical drama into a real one. Two in One's two parts, "Stagehands" and "Woman of a Lifetime," celebrate the psychological richness that lurks just beneath the surface of banal reality--if murderous stagehands, lascivious fathers and vengeful daughters can be described as banal. 1 videodisc (ca. 124 min.)

The End of an era 1992

Evgenii Frantsevich Bauer, Georgii Azagarov, Aleksandr Volkov, Erich Sargeant, Ivan Perestiani, Vladimir Strizhevskii, Nikolai Mariusovich Radin, L. V Kuleshov, Lidiia Koreneva, Ivan Il ich Mozzhukhin, Nataliia Lisenko, Nikolai Panov, Boris Zavelev, Khanzhonkov Production Company, Ermolev (Firm), Gosfil mofond SSSR, British Film Institute, and Milestone Film & Video

Between the February and October revolutions in 1917, Russian cinema reflected urgent new themes, as in 'The Revolutionary.' But Bauer also continued his vein of tragic melodrama in what was to be his last film, 'For Luck' ... A poignant fragment, 'Behind the Screen,' shows the stars Mozzhukhin and Lisenko on the eve of their departure into exile. 1 videodisc (91 min.)

Bauer is certainly the major discovery of the early Russian cinema.  In a mere five prolific years he achieved mastery in several genres, including the social melodrama of A Child of the Big City (1913), erotic comedies like The 1002nd Ruse (1915), and the psychological gothic melodrama of Daydreams (1915). Admired by his contemporaries, he raised Russian cinema to an unparalleled artistic level before his early death in mid-1917. 1 videodisc (93 min.)

K Paramonova, Viktor Dyomin, Moskino Kombinat, Films de l'Astrophore, Michael Kustow Productions, Epidem Films, Sept/Arte (Firm), Société de lancement des oeuvres nouvelles, Iskra Films, Icarus Films, and Arte Video (Firm)

"This two-disc set includes Chris Marker's tribute to Russian film director Alexander Medvedkin, Medvedkin's silent classic 'Happiness' (1934), and loads of extras." ;  "Based on the life and work of the Russian film director Alexander Medvedkin (1900-1989), 'The last bolshevik' is a tribute from one filmmaker to another. An archeological expedition into film history that reveals new cinematic treasures, the film prompts a reflection on the relation between art and politics in the former Soviet Union. The film captures the commitment, energy, struggles, illusions and disillusions of a believing but never naďve bolshevik. From Medvedkin's classic 1934 satire 'Happiness', and the 'film train' which he directed in the 1930s, to his sardonic comedies and bitter war newsreels, Chris Marker draws a panorama of the artistic, political, and moral universe of a life and a country, bringing it right up to date with his own vision of Russia today. An intricate work with many levels and layers, 'The last bolshevik' is also a distillation of the art and beliefs of one of the greatest documentarians of our time, Chris Marker, who has revolutionized documentary as his near-contemporary Jean-Luc Godard transformed film fiction, crossing boundaries and mixing genres."--Icarus Films website, viewed 20 May 2009. 1 videodisc (DVD) (64 min.) 1 videodisc (DVD) (120 min.)

A panorama of Russian cinema's social impact: Antosha Ruined By A Corset (Puchalski, 1916) is a racy, knowing urban comedy; A Life For A Life (1916) marked the pinnacle of Bauer's ambition to equal lavish foreign production standards; and The Funeral of Vera Kholodnaia (1919) records the vast public response to the early death of Russia's greatest star. 1 videodisc (86 min.)

Protazanov, a leading director of the early Russian cinema, did not shrink from controversy during his highly successful career.
