Blank city 2012

In the late 1970s to the middle 1980s, Manhattan was in ruins. But true art has never come from comfort, and it was precisely those dire circumstances that inspired artists like Jim Jarmusch, Lizzy Borden, and Amos Poe to produce some of their best works. Taking their cues from punk rock and new wave music, these young maverick filmmakers confronted viewers with a stark reality that stood in powerful contrast to the escapist product being churned out by Hollywood. Documents the history of "No wave cinema" and "cinema of transgression" movements. 1 videodisc (95 min.)

The documentary Rouch's Gang follows the film crew and provides a glimpse behind the scenes as Jean Rouch and his four friends from Niger make their film. De filmer le d© sir voyage ©  travers le cin© ma des femmes = Filming desire : a journey through women's cinema 2000

This documentary explores the works of women film directors, specifically the differences explicit in women's point of view, and expression of desire as articulated in films by women. In interviews, women directors working today discuss how their depictions of sexuality and relationships reflect the basic differences between the sexes--as revealed by image, shot, and story. The filmmakers and their films encapsulate the debates about sexuality, representation and image, and the body (as subject of censorship; as the vehicle of desire and love; as the contested ground of cinematic production) that have raged since the first woman picked up a camera, determined to claim her identity and find her voice. 1 videodisc (60 min.)

The end of a world Albert Kahn's archive of the planet 2009

Saskia Baron, David Thompson, David Okuefuna, Veronika Hyks, British Broadcasting Company, Musée Albert Kahn, and Films for the Humanities & Sciences (Firm)

"As they built an unsurpassed visual archive of world culture, Albert Kahn and his photographers turned their attention to widely divergent locations. This program follows the maritime odyssey of Lucien Le Saint, circa 1922, as he captured on film the daily lives of Newfoundland cod fisherman, as well as expeditions into northwestern Africa. Images from Morocco and Tunisia focus on occupying French soldiers, the prostitutes they patronized, and larger changes in those societies, while pictures taken in Dahomey (now Benin) shed light on the symbiotic relationship between Catholocism and the Vodun religion. Viewers also learn about the Colonial Exhibition of 1931, Kahn's financial collapse, and the fate of his archive after his death in 1940."--Container. 1 videodisc (51 min.) :

Europe on the brink Albert Kahn's archive of the planet 2009

Saskia Baron, Rosie Schellenberg, David Okuefuna, Veronika Hyks, British Broadcasting Company, Musée Albert Kahn, and Films for the Humanities & Sciences (Firm)

"Poverty, emigration, declining birth rates, and ethnic divisions weakened many European countries as the 20th century began. From France to the Balkans, leaders prescribed nationalism and military buildup as the only solutions. This program studies the continent's march to war as depicted in the photographic record commissioned by French banker Albert Kahn. Early color images and film footage explore a range of themes -- including contrasts between urbanization and rural life in France, Germany and Scandinavia, the decline of the Ottoman Empire and its impact in Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece and Macedonia; and the grittinessof everyday life in Europe. Kahn's pacifism is also a topic ."--Container. 1 videodisc (51 min.) :

"This two-disc set includes Chris Marker's tribute to Russian film director Alexander Medvedkin, Medvedkin's silent classic 'Happiness' (1934), and loads of extras." ;  "Based on the life and work of the Russian film director Alexander Medvedkin (1900-1989), 'The last bolshevik' is a tribute from one filmmaker to another. An archeological expedition into film history that reveals new cinematic treasures, the film prompts a reflection on the relation between art and politics in the former Soviet Union. The film captures the commitment, energy, struggles, illusions and disillusions of a believing but never naďve bolshevik. From Medvedkin's classic 1934 satire 'Happiness', and the 'film train' which he directed in the 1930s, to his sardonic comedies and bitter war newsreels, Chris Marker draws a panorama of the artistic, political, and moral universe of a life and a country, bringing it right up to date with his own vision of Russia today. An intricate work with many levels and layers, 'The last bolshevik' is also a distillation of the art and beliefs of one of the greatest documentarians of our time, Chris Marker, who has revolutionized documentary as his near-contemporary Jean-Luc Godard transformed film fiction, crossing boundaries and mixing genres."--Icarus Films website, viewed 20 May 2009. 1 videodisc (DVD) (64 min.) 1 videodisc (DVD) (120 min.)
