The goal of this assignment is to gain a deeper understanding of The Stranger by Albert Camus through his philosophical essay The Myth of Sisyphus.  You will also be referring to one outside source to strengthen your argument. You should be able to incorporate your own voice/argument as a writer with the ideas of other thinkers to deepen your claim.

Topics
Your first step is to decide upon a topic. The Stranger is full of possible research topics. The key is to choose a topic that is relevant to the story and is of interest to you. You can, with my permission, choose your own research topic, or work with one of the following ideas.

Religion: What are the religious themes in this story? What can the reader infer is Camus’ argument on religion and how does he demonstrate that?

Crime: What are the critiques of crime and the law in this novel? How does Meursault respond to the idea of crime versus the characters around him?

Law: How does the novel reckon with the court system and the interiority of the mind? Is there a tension between truth, absurdity, and the law?

Colonialism: What is the relationship between Meursault and the Arab? How do you think that effects or impacts Camus’ exploration of various themes in the novel?

Irrationality/Absurdity of Life: What does Meursault mean when he says “I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world?”

Before settling on a topic, be sure to conduct some preliminary research to make sure there is information out there.
