Masks

Materials such as leather, ceramic, and paper are implemented in the construction of masks, and provide various options for design and form.  Additional decorations in the form of feathers, beads, or jewels can add to the aesthetic nature of the mask. The choice of colors and patterns can reveal greater insight into the values and culture of the individuals who make it.  While physical masks can be held or worn, people also mask themselves through other methods. Cosmetic alterations such as makeup, tattoos, and face painting are notable for the transforming nature they have over one’s appearance and sense of identity.

Goal

Inspired by the Mid-Winter Mask Making event held at the Carr Library as part of Friendship Fridays organized by Rutgers Global, we chose to review the different ways masks are created, used, and interpreted by people. The uses and interpretation of masks is varied and ranges from aspects of fun and celebration to cultural rituals, protection, and a sense of identity.  Throughout the research guide, you will find different resources available to discover more information and unmask the greater meaning of these objects.
