Welcome!
This Research Guide for Music of Asia is currently under construction.
On this page, you will find many reference tools for getting started on research for Asian music.
The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music is one of the most important reference tools for understanding the academic study of music of various countries.
The volumes are divided by world region, and then within the volumes generally by country or ethnic groups. The encyclopedia is primarily written by ethnomusicologists, so its focus tends to be on traditional music, though there is also coverage of "art" music and court music.
Rutgers University Library has both a print copy available in the Performing Arts Library Reference section and an online copy of the entire encyclopedia through Garland World Music Online.
If we don't have the article or book you need here at Rutgers don't give up! Request virtually any resource from libraries around the country and around the world withUBorrow, EZBorrow, or Interlibrary loan.
