NewRefWorks: FAQ

Basic guide for RefWorks 3, or the New RefWorks to assist NBL reference and instruction services.


Does RefWorks have a storage limit?

RefWorks allows you to store up to 100 GB worth of documents. You can also choose to store your documents in Dropbox. For more information, see Reading documents offline with Dropbox.

Will I continue to have access to my RefWorks account after I leave Rutgers?

Yes, all faculty and student alumni will continue to have access to their RefWorks account as long as Rutgers continues to subscribe.

Can I use both versions of RefWorks simultaneously?

Yes. If you're unsure about upgrading, you can create an account on the new platform and migrate your legacy account later.

A few notes about using RefWorks and RefWorks 3 simultaneously:

Upgrade from Legacy RefWorks

Rutgers has not yet announced when it will discontinue the Legacy RefWorks. Current legacy users are advised to consider upgrading to the new platform.

To upgrade from Legacy RefWorks: 

  • Login to your Legacy RefWorks account
  • Click the link at the top of the screen that says “Move to the newest version of RefWorks”
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to compete your account setup

Known issues and contraindications:

Using Write-n-Cite:  documents started in legacy RefWorks may not be compatible with new RefWorks. You may want to wait with the upgrade until you finished your project.

Migration: all your documents and folders will be migrated. You may want to review. clean up, and organize your legacy RefWorks library. before teh upgrade.  For more information, see the Upgrading to the New RefWorks.
