Communication in Relationships (04:192:201)

Library research guide for Communication in Relationships (04:192:201)

Citing Your Sources

You will need to document your findings by listing the journal articles and books that you consulted during your research process. Most professors specify the style manual you are required to use. The one most frequently required in communication studies is the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). Print copies of the sixth and seventh editions of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2010 & 2020) are available at each of the Rutgers libraries.

  • In text citations: When you make references to other research papers either by paraphrasing its findings or by using direct quotations, you will need to make references to those papers in the text of your paper using the author-date system. This practice is referred to as "in text citations" or “citing references in text”.
  • Reference list: At the end of the paper, you will need to alphabetize all the sources you used in your paper so that other readers can locate the sources that you used. This is called  “the reference list”.

For sample in text and reference citations visit the APA Style site.

Using RefWorks

RefWorks is a Web based bibliography and citation manager to which Rutgers subscribes on behalf of the Rutgers community. You can import citations from QuickSearch and other online databases.

  • RefWorks helps you organize your research materials by allowing you to use different folders and build bibliographies using the style manual of your choice (e.g., APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.).
  • If you are a first time user of RefWorks, you will need to create an account. You may also want to visit the RefWorks guide.

A word of caution! It is very important that you understand how to format your materials in whatever style you are using. The RefWorks program can make mistakes. You need to be able to detect the errors and correct them before you turn in your final paper. You are responsible for your own citations!

Other options to manage citations for shorter papers

You may not need to use RefWorks if you're doing a short paper. Try one of these options for information on formatting citations and references.
