Scholarly Metrics in the Humanities and Social Sciences: Book Metrics

Web of Science for Counting Book Citations

Web of Science includes the Book Citation Index, which indexes over 80,000 editorially selected books in sciences, social sciences, and humanities from 2005 to present. About 10,000 books are added to the index every year.

When the book is found, a summary page will display its citation count. For this particular book, the citation count is 22.

Google Scholar for Counting Book Citations

Google Scholar also provides citation counts for books and book chapters. It indexes many more books than Web of Science, even though the exact number is unknown. In general, Google Scholar also provides higher citation counts for individual book titles. For the book Act of Justice: Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and the Law of War, Google Scholar provides a citation count of 38, compared to 22 in Web of Science.

Book Reviews

Besides citation counts, book reviews are also an important indicator of book quality. To find book reviews from Rutgers University Libraries, please use the resources on the Book Reviews list.
