This guide was put together with the goal of helping students in Instructor Mary Kate Costa-Matthews’ Spring 2019 English Composition course get started with finding a few sources for their research paper assignment.  It is intended to complement and supplement the April 17, 2018 library research instruction session.

By no means is this an exhaustive guide to doing research, so if you have any questions, please Ask-A-Librarian!  If you would like to get in touch with Tammy Syrek-Marshall or Bonnie Fong, their contact information is in their profiles in the right column.

Mission Statement

The mission of bibliographic instruction is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to do scholarly research. As students of Mary Kate Costa-Matthew's Spring 2018 English 102 class., your mission is to take what you learn today and put it into practice in completing your assignments. Even then, the mission is far from over. As undergraduates, you will find that these skills will frequently be put to use since what you learn here can be applied to many other classes. Once you have the basics down, it will be up to you to continue to practice these skills.

After attending this class, students will be able to:

  • Develop a research plan
  • Evaluate information sources
  • Know how use the QuickSearch Library Catalog to find books and other materials
  • Know how to use research databases to find articles and other materials
  • Know how to prepare quick bibliographies in MLA style
  • Know where to go and who to talk to when you need research assistance
