Federal search engine especially for datasets from government and other sources.

US Census

Online site for census information, including population, social and economic characteristics, ancestry, economic census (business establishments and so forth), and information about state and local governments.  Based upon the decennial census, the economic census,and official surveys such as the American Community Survey. Besides the full American Factfinder search engine, some interesting subjects covered by specialized searches are: School District Data ; QuickFacts about states, counties, and cities; and the American Community Survey. The County Business Patterns page, which includes business patterns by zip code as well as by county, leads to overview stats; detailed information for US counties can now be accessed through American FactFinder..
