Creating Search Keywords

Advanced Searching Techniques

Once you've determined keywords to produce relevant search results for your topic, use the following techniques to filter and refine your results:
AND
Type AND in-between keywords to find results that contain both keywords. Must be in all caps.
William Faulkner's Sanctuary AND morality
OR
Type OR in-between keywords to find results that contain either of the keywords Must be in all caps.
(useful when you have synonyms or related words that mean the same thing)
societal standards OR social mores
Quotations " "
Use quotes to search for a multi-word concept or phrase exactly
"gender dynamics"
Asterisk Symbol *
Use * to include alternate word endings
e.g. feminis* would search for the words feminist and feminism
Parenthesis ( )
use parentheses to create separate groups of actions in your search - similar to a math equation
"William Faulkner's Sanctuary" AND (societal standards OR social mores)
