Mary Colter's Phantom Ranch - Grand Canyon National Park. Built in 1922, Mary Jane Colter, an architect for Fred Harvey Col and the Santa Fe Railroad, designed a small group of rustic stone stone cabins at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, on the north side of the Colorado River, near the mouth of Bright Angel She named it Phantom Ranch, The the main lodge and stone cabins are built of local stone to blend them into the natural scenery. The ranch can only be reached by mule, by foot, or by rafting the Colorado River. Open year-round.
Mary Jane Colter and Her Buildings at Grand Canyon. This website from the National Park Services provide the biography and significant works, by Mary Jane Colter, architect and interior designer. She left a significant legacy of accomplishments in a field dominated by men. She worked for the Fred Harvey Co. from 1902 to 1948, when she retired.
