Welcome to the Smith Library of Health Sciences

Our health sciences library supports the information needs of RBHS faculty, students, and staff across all RBHS schools and institutes statewide, thereby enriching instructional and research activities. We serve the entire Rutgers University community, as well as other universities, major industries, and the general public. The Smith Library offers access to resources for clinical faculty and trainees affiliated with the Rutgers Health and University Hospital partnership. Our libraries also support individuals in residency programs and preceptors/voluntary faculty associated with Rutgers. Our highly skilled librarians are available to assist you in meeting your information needs. We offer instruction in various settings, including our Ask-a-Librarian service and our Meet the Experts webpage, as well as using web-enabled technologies for those in remote locations. The support staff at Smith Library is committed to providing excellent service to library patrons, utilizing the resources available at the Smith Library and other Rutgers libraries.

SMITH LIBRARY OF HEALTH SCIENCES POLICIES & STAFF

 The George F. Smith Library has varying hours based on the season. During the semester, the library is open:

  • Monday to Thursday: 7:30 AM – 12:00 AM
  • Friday: 7:30 AM – 10:00 PM
  • Saturday: 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM
  • Sunday: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM

During the Summer, the library is closed on weekends and has reduced hours of operation. Please check with the library to confirm the library’s hours of operation as you work with your supervisor to schedule your shifts.

To Access the RBHS Smith Library Building, one must follow these rules:

  • Smith Library is open for services to all Rutgers students/faculty/staff from 8:00 am-12:00 am.

  • Reference and instruction services are offered both in-person and online.

Study Rooms
  • Study rooms are available for group study. 
  • Students are required to use the online booking system in LibCal.

Book a Study Room

Visitors
  • Visitors are allowed from 8:00 am-6:00 pm. Computer support is available from 8:00 am -4:00 pm.
  • Visitors will need to sign in and show their Rutgers ID to Security.
  • For PC Reservations Media and Circulation Staff will register you.
  • Food is not allowed in Health Sciences' libraries. Drink is permitted only in spill-proof containers.

Approved spill-proof containers include:

  • Spill-proof mugs with secure lids
  • Sports bottles with a drinking spout
  •  Drink in capped bottles
Dress Code and General Duties
  • Casual, comfortable clothing in a way that is neat, clean, modest, and appropriate for a professional and academic setting.
Please Avoid
  • Revealing clothing (e.g., very short shorts, crop tops, low-cut shirts)
  • Clothing with offensive graphics or language
  • Pajamas, excessively ripped or unkempt clothing

Phone Etiquette

When answering the phone, please answer: “George F. Smith Library, your name, speaking.” 

If you are unable to answer a question, please take a brief message that includes the patron’s name and contact information. Leave the message on the lower shelf of the black tray on the circulation desk. You could also give the caller the email of the staff member they wish to contact or ask the caller to call us during regular business hours: (973)-972 -8538

*If you get phone calls about our hours from visitors, let them know that they might not have access on weekday evenings and weekends. 

Phone Calls Transfer

To transfer a phone call, you should:

  • Press the "People" button with an arrow.
  • Dial the phone number you want to transfer the call to, and then
  • Press the "People " button again.

A message will appear on the screen saying "Transferred Successfully."
