Instructions, guidelines, and best practices for creating and maintaining LibGuides at Rutgers University Libraries.

Adding Pages

To add a page to your guide:

  1. Click the + button in the tab area
  2. Choose whether to Create a new page or Reuse an existing page*
  3. If creating a new page, enter the following:
    • Page Name: The title of your page. (Note: Keep page titles short -- 3 words or less -- to avoid multiple rows of tabs.)
    • Description: (Optional) Appears as a tooltip when hovering over the page name.
    • Position: Top-level pages appears as tabs across the top of your guide. Subpages appear below top-level pages. (Note: Use subpages to group related content and avoid multiple rows of tabs.)
    • Profile Box:You can choose to display your own profile or that of anyone else in the system.
    • Draft Mode:Hide content that don't yet want to make visible to the public.
  4. Click Save

*Note: When reusing an asset, you must decide whether to create a copy or map to the original. Creating a copy creates a duplicate of the resource that you can edit. Mapping to the original means that the resource will remain linked to and be automatically updated with the original.

Editing Pages Properties & Layout

Use the page editing options below the tabs to edit page properties or modify page layout:

Edit the page title or description, set up a redirect URL, modify visibility, or reorder content.
Modify the number and width of columns on the page.

Tips for Creating Pages

  • Keep page titles short (3 words or less) to avoid multiple rows of tabs.
  • Enter page titles in title case as opposed to all caps (e.g., "Finding Books" not "FINDING BOOKS").
  • Assign your pages friendly URLs so they are easier to get to.
  • Too much content on a page may cause users to skip over things. Keep pages short and place most important information above the fold.
  • Use headings & bulleted lists to make content easier to scan.
