LibGuides Author Manual

Instructions, guidelines, and best practices for creating and maintaining LibGuides at Rutgers University Libraries.

Adding Links

To add links to your guide:

  1. Create a standard box and add a Link element
  2. Choose whether to Create a new link or Reuse an existing link*
  3. If creating a new link, enter the following:
    • Link Name: The name or title of your link
    • Link URL: The website or page to which you are linking
    • Window Target: Do you want the link to open in the same or a new window? (Note: system default is new window)
    • Proxy: Does this link require proxy authentication?
    • Description: A description of the website or page to which you are linking
    • More Info: Additional information about your link
    • Description Display: Set how the description should be displayed
    • Position: Determine the position of the link within the box
  4. [Optional] Assign an icon or thumbnail image to your link
  5. Click Save

*Note: When reusing an asset, you must decide whether to create a copy or map to the original. Creating a copy creates a duplicate of the resource that you can edit. Mapping to the original means that the resource will remain linked to and be automatically updated with the original.

Databases vs. Links

LibGuides now allows libraries to create a master list of database assets that authors can reuse to populate their guides. Database assets are managed by the administrator and exist separately from link assets. However, RUL does not currently use this feature so authors should ignore this option as no database holdings have been uploaded. Database links are currently created and managed like all other links in the system.
