Instructions, guidelines, and best practices for creating and maintaining LibGuides at Rutgers University Libraries.

Create a Guide

To create a new guide, click Create Guide from the LibGuides home/dashboard screen and complete the form.

Group Assignment If you are creating a guide for RBHS users, select the "Health Sciences" group. For all other guides, do not assign a group.
Start Fresh Select this option to create a new guide from scratch.
Copy an Existing Guide Select this option to load a copy of an existing guide for editing and reuse. You may reuse guides created by other Rutgers librarians or the wider LibGuides Community.
Guide Name Enter a clear and concise title. If creating a subject guide, simply enter the name of the subject, e.g., Anthropology. If creating a course guide, enter the course title followed in parentheses by the course number, e.g., Introduction to Literature (01:351:201). Consult the Rutgers University Schedule of Classes for course title and number information.
Short Description Enter a short description (255 characters max) of your content. The description tells users what your guide is about and is used in determining relevancy for search and retrieval.
Password Enter a password to restrict access to your guide. Only users with the password will be granted access. Use this option if your guide is intended for internal/staff use only and contains sensitive information.
Guide Type Do not assign a guide type. This feature is not in use.
Sharing Restriction Set to "Enabled" if you do not want others (including your colleagues) to be able to copy or reuse your guide.

Tips for Creating Guides

  • Guide titles should be concise, consistent, and clearly communicate the purpose of your guide.
  • Subject guide titles should include only the name of the subject or discipline they represent.
    • Examples: Chemistry as opposed to Chemistry Research Guide; Psychology as opposed to Information Resources in Psychology
  • Course guide titles should include the course title followed in parentheses by the course number. Course numbers and titles can be found in the Rutgers University Schedule of Classes.
    • Examples: Introduction to Literature (01:351:201) ; Ethics in Business (29:522:334); Psychology of Childhood (50:830:226)
  • All guides should have short, user-friendly URLs that are easy to remember and communicate.
    • Example: http://libguides.rutgers.edu/business NOT http://libguides.rutgers.edu/content.php?pid=149806
