Ask not c2008

Johnny Symons, Leah Wolchok, Persistent Visions, Independent Television Service, and New Day Films

ASK NOT exposes the tangled political battles that led to DADT and examines the societal shifts that have occurred since its 1993 passage. Since the law's implementation, more than 12,000 personnel have been discharged including linguists and others whose skills are critical to military operations. Current and veteran gay soldiers reveal how the policy has affected them during their tours of duty as they struggle to maintain a double life, uncertain of whom they can trust. The film also explores how gay veterans and youth organizers are turning to activism to challenge DADT. More than 15 years after DADT was passed, scores of retired and active military officers support doing away with it. The film looks at the history of "don't ask, don't tell" and as attitudes change, examines its ramifications for gay and lesbian individuals and for the military itself. 1 videodisc (73 min.) :

Encounters four ground-breaking classics of gay cinema 2012, 1965, 1970, 1971

Dream A40: Two years before the Sexual Offences Act decriminalized homosexuality, a young gay couple's relationship is put to the test as they make a journey during which they must refrain from public demonstrations of affection. Daring and poetic, Dream A40 was the second film by Jamaican actor-director Lloyd Reckord. Vapors: Independent US director Andy Milligan's first film offers a fascinating glimpse into the pre-Stonewall gay scene. Set in New York's St Mark's bathhouse, this bold and sensitive film chronicles an emotionally awkward encounter between two equally inexperienced strangers. Come dancing: Celebrated filmmaker Bill Douglas' early student short follows two men who meet in a cafe on a Southend pier. Glances, body language and very brief snatches of lewd dialogue suggest a pick-up, but the atmosphere soon darkens and events take an unexpected twist. Encounter: A number of young men wander through the streets of New York in a dream-like trance before finally coming together in a secret tactile ritual. Directed by legendary filmmaker Peter de Rome, this wordless erotic fantasy is presented here with a new score by Stephen Thrower (original score by Oliver Messiaen). 1 videodisc (73 min.)

Looking for Langston 2007

This self-described meditation on the life of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes addresses the possible, possibly imagined, life of the author as a gay man. Both documentary and fantasy, it blends archival footage with black and white paeans to a life that might have been--a Harlem nightclub from the 1920s, a London nightspot from the late eighties, various dream sequences--foregrounding gay sexual desire, constructed of a mélange of materials. Looking for Langston is not a mainstream film, but a short film, an avant-garde film, a gay film, and a black British film. Indeed, the prospect of viewing the film can be an off-putting one, considering its competing narrative lines as documentary, reclamation of an aspect of black history, rumination on the AIDS crisis, or pure fantasy. 1 videodisc (45 min.)

Proteus 2012?

"This comprehensive retrospective includes four features and thirty-seven shorts by Greyson. Proteus is a fact-based interracial gay love story of two men incarcerated in the infamous South African Robin Island prison in the 18th century. Claas Blank, a Koi herder was unjustly imprisoned for stealing cattle. Rijkhaart Jacobsz, a withdrawn Dutch sailor, was imprisoned for the crime of homosexuality. The two were placed on trial for sodomy and the film is based partly on court transcipts from the time. His films established him as a leading figure in the loosely defined New Queer Cinema movement of the early 1990s. His many shorts, addressing such diverse topics as gay penguins, censorship, gender conformity, solidarity with Palestinian queers, gay rights in Bosnia, and the American bombing of the Iraqi Film Archives, have been shown in festivals internationally. Throughout his extensive body of work that ranges from hybrid documentary and historical fiction to filmed operas and experimental video art, Greyson employs digitized Brechtian techniques and camp humour as instruments of cultural and political activism. His work engages audiences passionately and critically, occupying diverse cinematic genres (the essay, the song, the viral video) and distinctive formal devices (multiple layers of subtitles, split-screen, voice and anachronism) to wittily contest dominant discourses of sexuality, gender and power. These deft, challenging works tell outsider stories that trouble history and skewer complacency, joining a growing debate about the role of queer activism in today   s social justice struggles."--Pieced together from information found on Vtape. 2 videodiscs (102 min.)

This experimental video stages scenes from the trial, told four times: first as a period drama, second as a documentary investigation of the case, third as a musical agit-prop, and fourth, as a deconstruction of the actual court transcript. Uncut 2012?

"This comprehensive retrospective includes four features and thirty-seven shorts by Greyson. Uncut is a video about young men obsessed with Trudeau, circumcision and copyright issues, set amidst a confusing love triangle. 2 videodiscs (95 min.)
