Stem Cell Research

CBN research encompasses the complementary areas of cell biology, developmental biology and neurobiology with an emphasis on fundamental problems in cell signaling and communication. Current areas of focus are biomolecular recognition and cell communication as well as molecular mechanisms of neuronal signaling and synaptic plasticity.

The primary educational mission of the department is to provide outstanding training in the following critical areas of biomedical engineering and technology:Molecular, Cellular, and Nanosystems Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Engineering, Physiologic Systems & Bioinstrumentation, Computational Bioengineering and Biomedical Imaging

The department has a dynamic and active faculty doing cutting-edge research in all areas of chemical engineering, including biotechnology/biomolecular engineering, nano-pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical engineering, energy, and process systems. The program is host to an NIH-sponsored Biotechnology Training Program, and two NSF-funded IGERT graduate fellowship programs in Stem Cell Research and Nano-Pharmaceutics

Key focus areas in research include Biological and Biophysical Chemistry, Molecular Design and Synthesis, Nano- and Materials Chemistry and Pharma- and Medicinal Chemistry.

The Dept. of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (MBB) faculty combines molecular, biochemical, genetic, structural and cell biological approaches to study a diverse array of fundamental biological problems. Areas of study include understanding the role of chromatin in transcriptional regulation, RNA processing, DNA replication and transposition, protein folding and molecular recognition, circadian rhythm, signal transduction, cell cycle control, cell death and develoment

With the advent of tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and stem cell research, biomaterials science emerges as a key driver of the exciting transition from the use of simple prostheses, which replace damaged tissue with an artificial substitute, to the use of regenerative implants, which help the body heal itself.

The W.M.Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience is dedicated to multidisciplinary, collaborative research and to accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into effective human therapies. The focus of the Center's work is Spinal Cord Injury, with findings also applicable to persons with brain injuries, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and other problems of the Central Nervous System.

The Waksman Institute of Microbiology is an interdisciplinary research institute devoted to excellence in basic research. While in the early days research here focused on microbiology, current research encompasses a broad range of interests in developmental biology, cell biology, biochemistry, structural biology, genetics, and genomics.
