Finding Books in the Library Catalog

The Library Catalog  is the gateway to all information resources located in the Rutgers University Libraries.  Use keywords to search for the appropriate materials.  Experimenting with keywords is easier if you use Advanced Search (link to Advanced Search is under the blue Search button or click above).

Some examples:

  • Labor unions
  • Industrial relations
  • Strikes and lockouts
  • Collective bargaining

Searches using Library of Congress Subject Headings can yield more targeted results.  Subject headings can be further narrowed by adding:

  • location: (United States or Canada or Great Britain),
  • aspect: (government policy, economic aspects, social aspects),
  • population: (women, Hispanic-Americans, Asia),
  • type of publication (congresses, periodicals)
  • Examples:
  • Migration and immigration

    Foreign trade and employment

    Labor laws and legislation--Europe

    Globalization--Economic aspects

    Industrial relations--Great Britain

    Working class--France

    Women--Employment--Canada

To find other Library of Congress Subject Headings:

    • type in (“labor unions”) in the search box,
    • select “Subject begins with” from the drop-down menu under the search box.
    • “Labor unions” will be the top choice, followed by narrower forms of the subject (Labor unions--Accounting, Labor unions and communism, etc.)
    • Also look under the “Try these too” in the list on the right.
