Fig trees 2012?

Fig Trees recounts the history of AIDS activism in South Africa over the past two decades, by imagining that Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson are writing their 1934 avant-garde opera "Four Saints in Three Acts" based on the lives of Zackie Achmat of South African's Treatment Action Campaign and Tim McCaskell of Canada's AIDS Action. Weaving opera and campy clips of rewritten pop tunes, stylized reenactments of possible historical truths and powerful first-person testimony, the documentary implicates governments, corporations, and the media in the deaths by neglect of 25 million people worldwide, blending Bible references, modern history, high art, and popular culture. "This comprehensive retrospective includes four features and thirty-seven shorts by Greyson. John Greyson's films established him as a leading figure in the loosely defined New Queer Cinema movement of the early 1990s. His many shorts, addressing such diverse topics as gay penguins, censorship, gender conformity, solidarity with Palestinian queers, gay rights in Bosnia, and the American bombing of the Iraqi Film Archives, have been shown in festivals internationally. Throughout his extensive body of work that ranges from hybrid documentary and historical fiction to filmed operas and experimental video art, Greyson employs digitized Brechtian techniques and camp humour as instruments of cultural and political activism. His work engages audiences passionately and critically, occupying diverse cinematic genres (the essay, the song, the viral video) and distinctive formal devices (multiple layers of subtitles, split-screen, voice and anachronism) to wittily contest dominant discourses of sexuality, gender and power. These deft, challenging works tell outsider stories that trouble history and skewer complacency, joining a growing debate about the role of queer activism in today   s social justice struggles."--Pieced together from information found on Vtape. 2 videodiscs (105 min.)

Fire in the blood 2013

Fire in the blood tells the true story of how Western pharmaceutical companies and governments blocked access to low-cost AIDS drugs in Africa and the global south in the 1990s, leading to the preventable deaths of at least ten million people, and how a remarkable coalition of people came together to stop them. Shot on four continents and featuring contributions from global figures such as Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu, and Joseph Stiglitz, the film offers devastating insights into the lethal decisionmaking process that led to this humanitarian catastrophe. And it shows how, if not for the passion and tactical ingenuity of a group of courageous and relentless activists, millions of more people would have died. The result is a gripping look at corporate greed, government collusion, the cutthroat economics of medicine and healthcare, and the power of ordinary people to make meaningful change on a global scale. 1 videodisc (83 minutes)

HIV and AIDS

2 dollars with or without a condom 1996

Leyla Assaf-Tengroth

"Ethiopia has become to the Arab world what Thailand is to European tourists.  Prostitution in Ethiopia has increased incredibily in recent years.  In one section of Addis Ababa, some 130,000 girls support themselves by selling their bodies.  Most of them are under eighteen, and many even under fourteen.  In this probing documentary we meet the victims, girls that have been orphaned, or thrown out by their families, or are hoping to find a better life.  They are compelled to turn to prostitution to survive.  The young ones don't even earn enough money to buy food.  The older ones earn more but yearn to work the luxury hotels as high class prostitutes.  Virtually all the girls are HIV positive.  Condoms are seldom used, even though they are distributed free in many places. Customers, believing the youngest girls are HIV-free, seek them out, which in turn keeps lowering the age of girls becoming HIV infected.". 1 videocassette (40 min.)

Renata Simone, William Cran, Greg Barker, Will Lyman, WGBH (Television station : Boston, Mass.), Paladin InVision, Ltd, Silverbridge Productions, Granada Television International, Channel Four (Great Britain), WGBH Educational Foundation , and PBS Home Video

Part one follows the trail of a medical mystery which began in 1981 when five gay men in Los Angeles were diagnosed with a deadly new disease. Traces the international response in the first years of the epidemic, contrasting moments of inspirational leadership with the tragedy of missed opportunities. Reveals the astounding spread of the infection to over 70 million infections in 2006. Part two explores the chasm that emerged between rich and poor following the development of the miraculous "triple cocktail" HIV treatment. While the discovery seemed to signal a new era in which AIDS was no longer a fatal disease, the high price of the drugs meant they were unaffordable to patients in developing nations. Also examines the next wave of the AIDS epidemic in some of the most populous and strategically important nations in the world, including Russia, India and China, and tracks the same pattern of official denial and political indifference that characterized the epidemic in so many other countries. 1 videodisc (240 min.)
