Altmetrics for Researchers

This guide provides information on altenative metrics (altmetrics).

About This Guide

As more and more scholarly research information is being disseminated in the digital format via Internet as its primary means of information delivary, using traditional metrics such as journal impact factor and counts of citations to measure research impact is not sufficient. As we all know, it takes years to accumulate the number of citations. That is how altmetrics (Article Level Metrics) got adopted to supplement the traditional metrics. Altmetrics allow researchers, the early career researchers in particular, to have their scholarly works' impact measured quickly and in various ways.

This guide addresses the following aspects related to altmetrics:

What are altmetrics?

Development of altmetrics

How they are different from traditional metrics?

Major altmetrics tools

Research networking tools and websites

Selected readings
