There are several ways to seek help from a librarian:

Rutgers Libraries Toolbar

The Rutgers University Libraries Toolbar is a free Firefox extension (or add-on) that:

  • provides a drop-down menu to library resources
  • embeds library links on popular Websites such as
  • offers special functionality when you highlight terms on a Website and right-click over them with your mouse
  • allows linking from ISBNs, ISSNs, PubMed IDs, and DOIs to Rutgers-restricted online resources
  • is easy to install and easy to use

This guide was put together with the goal of helping students in Dr. Kristina Keating's Spring 2015 Applied Geophysics course get started with finding (at least 5) peer-reviewed original research articles for their final Written Paper Assignment.  It is intended to complement and supplement the April 9, 2015 library research instruction session.

By no means is this an exhaustive guide to doing research, so if you have any questions, please get in touch with Bonnie Fong ( or Ask-A-Librarian

Learning Objectives

Students attending the April 9, 2015 library research session for Dr. Keating's Applied Geophysics class will learn how to:

  • find peer-reviewed articles about their topic using library databases such as GeoRef
  • distinguish original research articles from other types of articles
  • format citations appropriately for their paper
